Hayes Grants

HAYES GRANT APPLICATION for SPRING 2010 now available

The Anne M. Hayes Memorial Fund was established in 1996 by Douglas A. Hayes, professor emeritus of finance at the University of Michigan, in memory of his wife Anne, a long-time Thrift Shop member and civic leader who died in January of that year. The income from the endowment fund is distributed twice a year, in June and December, to social service agencies serving clients in the Ann Arbor area. Grants usually range from $2,000—$5,000.

The Ann Arbor Thrift Shop requests proposals from qualified social service agencies [designated 501(c)(3)] for the Anne M. Hayes Fund disbursements (typically ranging from $2,000 to $5,000) to be made in late June 2010. Applications are available to agencies serving clients in the Ann Arbor School district. Starting April 6, download an application at the link above, pick one up at the store (3530 Washtenaw Avenue, Ann Arbor), or email webmaster@annarborthriftshop.org

In December 2009 the Thrift Shop awarded five grants totaling $10,500. Two of the grants were from the Ann M. Hayes Grant Fund. The other three were special Thrift Shop grants.

  • An Ann M. Hayes grant was given to the Hope Medical Clinic to help serve the low-income adults and children with out medical insurance. This is especially critical this year, as the Washtenaw Health plan and the State of Michigan Adult Medical Program have ceased to operate.
  • A grant was given to Perry Nursery School of Ann Arbor to fund a special project to offer early intervention services for three year olds to stem future chronic behavioral issues.
  • A Thrift Shop special grant was given to Friends In Deed to fund a one year pilot project which would respond to unmet emergency medical needs and provide an indicator of the level of need and funding amounts required in the future for this service.
  • A special Thrift Shop grant was given to Interfaith Hospitality Network to support the Family Wraparound Fund portion of their case management program. This program addresses the immediate needs of families at the shelter that cannot be met through the use of other community resources.
  • The Delonis Center Boot Fund was the recipient of a special Thrift Shop grant.
